Have a great week!

Dear Paradigm Preparatory Families,

We are nearing the end of our first semester! We have loved working with all of our students during this past year and we are looking forward to an exciting NEW semester! Here are some important things to be aware of for this coming semester.

Come see all the fascinating things our students have been working on! This Thursday, January 9th, from 7:00-8:00 pm, will be our Student Showcase. This is an opportunity for the students to present to their parents and fellow students some of the things they have studied or accomplished this past semester.

Next week is Simulations Week!  Simulations are a tradition at Paradigm where students role play a significant event from history.  The scenario for the Preparatory School this year was written by Bill Offutt (Barnard College) and is called Patriots, Loyalists, and Revolution in New York City, 1775-1776.  Students will be assigned to a Patriot, Loyalist, or other team and seek to have their team in control of New York City by the end of the event.  During the event students will be introduced to the arguments of Locke and Paine and read historical pamphlets debating the Stamp Act.  We hope students will have fun while gaining an appreciation for what it was like to live during the revolutionary period as they engage in the political, social and ideological dilemmas of the day. No regular classes will be held. More information will be given out in the coming week to prepare the students for this adventure!

Schedules for the Preparatory students will be handed out during Simulation Week. We will send home change forms with the students if you would like to make any changes. Students have the first two weeks of our second semester to change their schedules.

We are excited for this new semester and the coming changes! Here are the announcements for this week:

  • This Friday is a B Day! Please remind your band students to bring their instruments.
  • If your student is interested in being in choir next semester please see the attached flyer.
  • Theater Club Students: Please bring your costume tomorrow to practice! We will be doing dress rehearsals from 3-4pm. Practice your lines and get ready to perform! We perform THIS WEEK!
  • Come to Social Dance Club! We will be starting off the new year with vintage dancing - these are group dances that were danced during the Regency and other historical time periods. Join us this Thursday at 3 pm in the east side of the gym. Bring your friends and come ready to have a good time!
  • Attention Mock Trial members! The schedule is here and the competition dates are set! Come Tuesday to room #141 from 3:00-4:00 pm to find out the details. See you soon!
  • There will no longer be a Superhero's Club. Do not plan to attend any more this semester or next.
  •  Many library books are due today. If you need them longer, feel free to stop in and we would be happy to renew them. Don't let your fines get out of control. The library wishes you a happy and successful new year!
  • Parent Education Night: Wednesday January 15th from 6:30-7:30 pm in room #142. We will be focusing on student mental and emotional safety and providing community resources for mental and emotional health for your student.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Join us for our First Annual

MATH OLYMPIAD!

On the evening of April 3, 2014 (Time: TBA)

The Math Olympiad event will be similar to a spelling bee. There will be a main math competition for every class level: 7/6, 8/7, Pre-Algebra and up. Each student will only be competing in their level, and questions will be taken from the class textbook. Mastering their textbook will prepare all students for the competition!

We will also have various individual events that involve speed contests for math facts, vocabulary words, and story problems, among others. Don’t miss out on the refreshments and prizes that night! Mark your calendars for this family friendly event! Come support our students in all their hard work becoming Paradigm mathematicians!

We will have big prizes for the main winners (ipod shuffles *hint- hint*) and also drawings for prizes, big and small, for ALL those who participate. Currently, we are giving all students, whether they are going to participate or not, the opportunity to earn tickets for math goals completed (see below). We do a drawing each Monday. On Math Olympiad night, we will clear the drawing boxes and only put in names of those who have chosen to participate in the challenges.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL OUR MATHEMATICIANS! AND MAY THE ODDS (OR EVENS) BE EVER IN YOUR FAVOR!

How can I earn tickets for Math Olympiad drawings?
